Quality Cleaners is a Central Pennsylvania pioneer in the area of ‘wet cleaning’. What is wet cleaning? It’s not just washing. Wet cleaning is a method in garment cleaning, utilizing a gentle washing machine, biodegradable soaps and conditioners specialized for many different fabric and fiber types. The most important aspect of successful wet cleaning is experience and knowledge of different types of fabrics and proper ways to finish garments by operators.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wet cleaning does not use hazardous chemicals, it does not generate hazardous waste, nor does the process create air pollution. It also reduces the potential for water and soil contamination. The specialized detergents and conditioner used in the wet clean process are more mild than even many home laundry products.
At Quality Cleaners we have found that wet cleaning, in combination with dry cleaning, is more efficient and economical to implement than dry cleaning alone.
How does it work? The garments are placed in a computerized wet cleaning machine that looks very similar to a washing machine. The clothes are wet by already conditioned water, then agitated just enough to extract the dirt and grime; but not enough to alter the structure, size or color of the garment. The garments are then transferred to a high-tech drying unit that automatically stops once a predetermined level of moisture is reached.
Click HERE for a video about our state-of-the-art shirt pressing process.
Here’s how our shirt laundry process works:
The shirts are brought to our shirt department and given a descriptive ticket and a bar coded heat seal.
The heat seal is a tag adhered by glue and heat. It tells us information about the shirt and makes marking in more efficient.
The shirts are then separated into light, dark, hand presses, and dry cleaning. This keeps the shirts safe and ready to press. The shirts are also separated into no starch, light starch, medium starch, and heavy starch.
What is starch? Laundry starch is a vegetable byproduct, most often corn, and added to the shirts as a powder. Starch helps keep the form of the shirt longer. In other words, you’re less likely to develop wrinkles, looking sharp all day. Some say starch feels stiff or rigid, like wearing cardboard. Others feel a shirt is just incomplete without it.
Shirts are then laundered by a careful balance of 4-6 chemicals to ensure a safe, thorough cleaning and resulting in a neutral pH. The temperature in which the shirts are laundered varies by garment. Typically, it ranges from 65 degrees to 130 degrees. The temperature varies by garment. Typically, hot should be between 120 & 140 degrees, warm 85-105 degrees & cold 65-75. Water below 60 degrees is too cold for detergents to be helpful.
After laundering, the shirts are taken out of the machine and put in a queue for pressing. Shirts are pressed wet, first on the collar and cuff press, then on the ‘bosom’ press.
The shirts are then checked for spots, wrinkles, missing buttons, or other unsatisfactory issues. If there are any wrinkles, they are hand pressed on a ‘hot head’ press.
Once satisfactory, the shirts are scanned to assign them as ‘finished’, bagged, and filed alphabetically.
Happy customer picks up clean shirts and looks professional and sharp.

We now offer professional rug cleaning. We will clean your Area Rug or your Oriental Rug for you, returning it clean and deodorized. The difference you will see in a clean rug is amazing.
Most Oriental or area rug cleaners just surface clean your rug. Our technicians first vacuum the rug vertically and horizontally. Twice. They then ‘badger’ the rug, getting all the dirt and other small particulates out of the rug. Finally, the rug is submerged, resulting in a thorough cleaning.
If you have pet odors in your rug, our rug cleaning is guaranteed to remove that odor.
We will also check your padding beneath your rug for wear and tear. Rug padding will decrease wear and tear on your rug, as well as lengthen the life of your rug, leading to less rug cleaning in the future. Rug pads actually have many other benefits as well. Along with a longer Area or Oriental rug life, rug padding also prolongs the life of your floor. The rug backing and the dust work like sandpaper to scratch your floor over time. In addition, rug pads make for a healthier home. They create airflow underneath the rug which allows for better suction when vacuuming. This airflow prevents odor causing bacteria like mold and mildew under your rug.
Here are a few rug cleaning tips:
Vacuum your area rug regularly. Horizontally, then vertically. Just make sure to not vacuum the fringe of your rug.
Foot traffic and sun can put extra stress on area rugs. Turn them once or twice a year to even out the wear.
It’s recommended that you have an area rug professionally cleaned once a year and rotate the rugs to ensure even wear.
Area rugs will benefit from a deep cleaning every 12 – 18 months.
Time is of the essence when your rug becomes stained. Remember to blot, not rub, the stain as quickly as possible.
Blot any spills with a 100% white cotton towel. For wet spills lay towel on spot.
Gum on your rug? Peel off what you can, put ice cubes in a plastic bag to harden the gum. Scrape with spoon, then vacuum.
Do you have a rug pad beneath your area rug?

It is certainly the end of an era at Quality Cleaners. This summer, three of our four partners, Haim, Barry and Ed, retired. Haim (son-in-law of Freda) joined the business in 1979 when he moved to the United States with his wife and their 1 year old daughter, Maya. Barry (son-in-law of Sandy) joined Quality Cleaners in 1989 when the family chose to sell Rose Family
Cleaners and all work together under one roof. (He had worked at Rose Family since 1982). Ed (son of Sandy) joined us in 2000 when he moved back to the Harrisburg area with his wife and three children. Haim, Barry and Ed will be greatly missed, but we could not be happier for them as they move into the next phase of their lives. We wish Haim, Barry and Ed our sincerest congratulations on their retirements!!!
We also want to take this opportunity to assure our loyal customers that the quality and excellence that is synonymous with Quality Cleaners will continue without interruption. The fourth partner to join the business in 2008, Lee (son-in-law of Haim), will continue to lead Quality Cleaners with his enthusiasm and creativity. His wife, Maya, will also take a more active role in the business. This change comes almost exactly 60 years after her grandparents, Freda and Steve, started Quality Cleaners. We believe that they would be quite proud of how Quality Cleaners has grown and will continue to grow under its 3rd generation of family leadership.
We are excited and extremely confident that with Lee’s leadership, Quality Cleaners will continue to offer the same outstanding service that our customers have relied upon for the past 60 years. Quality Cleaners is the premier Dry Cleaners in the Harrisburg Area. We also happen to have the most professional and knowledgeable Drapery Cleaning team in the Harrisburg Area. We clean most draperies, curtains, valances and sheers. Our goal is to provide the safest solution to cleaning your fabric needs.
Unlike most other local drycleaners, Quality Cleaners is truly GREEN. The solvent we use is called SolvonK4. K4 is organic, biodegradable, and in addition safe for skin, air, and water. Here is a link to a Pennlive.com article on 10/10/2011 featuring Quality Cleaners and our move to our GREEN solvent. We were the first dry cleaners in Central PA to make this switch.
Why do I have a water stain on my drapery?
Water stains often seem like the outline of a brown mountain range on the bottom of your drapery. This brown staining is due to the fabric getting wet. The moisture pulls the sizing or starch that was originally sprayed on the fabric to concentrate into a mass. This concentrated mass oxidizes over time and turns brown. Older stains tend to be darker than more recent stains. Older water stains can lighten with professional cleaning, but unfortunately, some evidence of the moisture probably will remain.
Curtain Cleaning Harrisburg
Curtains are usually made of lighter weight, unlined fabrics. Curtains are typically used for a more casual look than a traditional drapery. Sheer curtains are popular as both a standalone window treatment as well as an under treatment behind more formal drapery. Professional curtain cleaning is extremely similar to professional drapery cleaning. Sheers tend to become dingy over time as soot and dust obscure the fabric so less light can pass through it. This change is harder to notice, as they are often used as an under treatment.
How often do we suggest curtain cleaning or drapery cleaning?
While the drapery cleaning industry suggests routine curtain cleaning or drapery cleaning every 2-3 years, you can’t go wrong cleaning more often.
Reasons for drapery cleaning:
Draperies, curtains, and other window treatments can appear clean to the naked eye. However, they are often dirtier than you realize. Here are some good reasons to probably consider drapery cleaning for your home:
Allergen reduction – Drapes and other window treatments trap allergens, pollen, mold, insects, and other pollutants. These pollutants can negatively affect the air quality in your home.
Dust Removal – Dirt and dust accumulate in your window treatments. Whenever you open or close your window treatments, these particulates, therefore, get recycled back into the air.
Maintain appearance – Drapes, curtains, and valances are all part of the style and decor of your room. Keeping the pattern, texture, and color of your window treatments looking their best complement your design vision.
Longevity – Regular professional drapery cleaning will ultimately improve the longevity of your curtain and drapery fabrics.
Prevent discoloration – Your skin deposits natural oils onto your window treatments when you open and close them. As a result, this oil can attract more dust and other particulates that can lead to discoloration without regular cleaning.
One of our customers came in recently concerned about a wool sweater with blood on it. She assumed there was absolutely nothing that could be done to clean the wool sweater and that it was ruined. Fortunately for this customer,
in addition to our best in the Harrisburg, PA area dry cleaning, Quality Cleaners is also a local pioneer in the emerging science of wet cleaning.
What is wet cleaning?
Wet cleaning is a cleaning process that involves gentle machine washing using water, biodegradable soaps, and conditioners. Essentially, the conditioner mixes with the water before it touches the clothes. This inhibits the fibers’ ability to absorb the water. Thi is the main cause of shrinkage in the garment and renegade dye transfer.
As found on Wikipedia, “According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wet cleaning is the most environmentally sensitive professional method of garment cleaning. It does not use hazardous chemicals, it does not generate hazardous waste, nor does the process create air pollution and it reduces the potential for water and soil contamination. The specialized detergents and conditioner used in the wet clean process are milder than home laundry products. All of the products are disposed of down the drain and easily handled by the local waste water treatment facility.”
The other benefit- wet cleaning offers a better cleaning solution to water soluble stains (food, blood, soda, alcohol, etc.) than dry cleaning. This came in especially handy for Quality Cleaners in the case of this wool sweater with blood on it. It also works on many other garments that come into our Harrisburg, PA area plant.
Isn’t wet cleaning just washing?
Wet cleaning is similar to washing but with a few key differences. Firstly, the water is conditioned before touching the clothing as noted above. Secondly, there is significantly less water used in the wet cleaning process. Also, although done in a machine that is also capable of washing, wet
cleaning demands a much more specific and gentle mechanical action based on the type of garment. The specifics include the time and speed in ‘tumble’, the temperature of the water, and the extraction time and speed. There are also significantly different soaps and conditioners involved in the wet cleaning process. Typically these soaps and conditioners are also ‘GREEN‘, biodegradable, safe for the people using it, and the environment.
What garments do you use wet cleaning vs dry cleaning?
At Quality Cleaners we have found success wet cleaning many beaded and/or decorated garments that have been historically less successful in dry cleaning. We have also had tremendous success in our Fire and Water Restoration business wet cleaning textiles that have soot damage, smoke damage, mold damage, mildew damage, water damage or other malodorous issues.
Contact us any time for more information on our wet cleaning process or our dry cleaning in the Harrisburg, PA area. Please contact us if you have any water damage, smoke damage, or other damage restoration needs. Quality Cleaners is also available for rug cleaning in the Harrisburg, PA area.

-I found my great grandmother’s wedding gown in her attic. Do you clean gowns that are extremely aged and possibly yellowed? It is our pleasure to clean hand-me-down, antique, and sentimental wedding gowns. Over the years we have cleaning hundreds or thousands of aged gowns, dresses, veils, suits, and other wedding celebratory garments. We take extreme care of these items, and our experience yields fantastic results. Here is a link to our blog post describing our selection as the vendor to clean garments and household items from a Historic home dating back to the early 1800’s.
-I had an outdoor wedding and my gown is FILTHY! How clean can Quality Cleaners get my gown?
Our cleaning process can remove just about any stain you can get in your gown. Typically we receive gowns with and subsequently remove: dirt, mud, makeup, perspiration, food, wine, and even occasionally blood. Of course, the sooner the gown comes to be treated, the more successful the gown cleaning will be. Think your wedding gown is too dirty? We accept the challenge.
-Will my gown be boxed when I get it back from Quality Cleaners?
Your gown (and up to 3 items such as veil, shoes, etc.) will be returned to you in an acid free keepsake box and packed in acid free tissue paper.
The keepsake box has a viewing window for you to be able to see your beautifully preserved Wedding Gown any time you would like. The keepsake box is then placed in a protective storage box to ensure it’s safety and preservation. The combination of boxes ensure that the gown is protected from moisture, humidity, and temperature changes that may occur in your home. The box also protects from insects, moths, and other pests that may be near the box.
The furniture now displayed in this fine stone house mostly antedates 1790, and several pieces were made by New Jersey craftsmen. In addition, many articles in the home were made and/or donated by New Jersey Daughters. The Isaac Watson House is located at 151 Westcott Ave., Hamilton, NJ. Watson House is easily accessible from Route 206, heading towards Trenton.
Quality Cleaners was selected to clean the textiles in this historic location following the discovery of mold development in the home. As the structure of the home was going through remediation, we took on the task of preserving these precious, remarkable textiles while cleaning them to the best possible outcome.
A few of the notable pieces we were entrusted with included:
This coverlet is on permanent loan to the Watson House in memory of Olivia Rich Hall (1784-1869). Ms. Hall grew the flax, spun, and wove the coverlet in 1804. The coverlet was presented through the Cranetown Chapter of the DAR by Grace Forster Hanchett, June Hanchett Daar, and Olivia Daar Dreikorn.

This week, your favorite Greater Harrisburg Dry Cleaner has been #OnTheRoad pretty hard. Our Textile Restoration Team has been in a different town every day this week either picking up or delivering textiles affected by fire, smoke, fire extinguisher dust, or water damage. We actually were called in to rescue clothes in each of those situations just this week.
The Restoration Team, after driving to Trenton, NJ tomorrow for a really cool, historic job- which we will highlight next week- will have traveled around 1000 miles in just this week.
When Quality Cleaners in Lemoyne opened the doors in September of 1958, our two employees shared the building with a doughnut shop and charged 10 cents to clean a shirt and 55 cents for a pair of trousers. Since then, we have doubled the size of the building- twice. Our 35 employees now fill an 8,000-square-foot building, have three external storage spaces, and our three vans are constantly on the road. It’s been an extraordinary journey to say the least.
Please stop in today to say hello or share a fun Quality Cleaners memory on our Facebook page. We at the store and those who we are lucky enough to have as loyal customers for all these years greatly appreciate these stories and well wishes.
